Letter to the Sydney Daily Telegraph:-

21Jul05

In discussing whether such hateful books as those being sold by Islamic
bookstores should be allowed, your editorial of July 19 refers to Australia
as a free country and says that, correspondingly, Australians should be free
to read such literature.

Since when was Australia a free country? It's a country where I cannot set
up a website of my choosing if it provides information or promotes voluntary
euthanasia. It's a country where I cannot counsel via e-mail other
Australians if it's about euthanasia. It's a country where I cannot speak on
the telephone or even send a fax if it promotes voluntary euthanasia.

Australia, a free country? The price you pay for being an older Australian
and seeking information and comfort, often in times of pain, is going to be
psychologically expensive and damaging. That's not ``free'' to me.

Footnote: When my book 'Final Exit' first appeared in Australia in l991 it
was immediately banned by the censorship board. But on appeal it was
conditionally released. It is available now in its 3rd edition in
Australia bookstores. Thus you can't get information on euthanasia off the
Internet in Australia, but you can buy it in a bookstore! ----------List
