Doctors maintain opposition to euthanasia
01 August 2005

The New Zealand Medical Association (NZMA) board has decided not to change
its position opposing euthanasia.

NZMA chairman Ross Boswell said the board had voted this weekend to retain
its current position which was to oppose euthanasia, which it viewed as

Dr Boswell said the NZMA board approved a formal policy statement on
euthanasia and doctor-assisted suicide.

The policy states: "The NZMA is opposed to both the concept and practice of
euthanasia and doctor-assisted suicide. Euthanasia, that is the act of
deliberately ending the life of a patient, even at the patient's request or
at the request of close relatives, is unethical."

The NZMA's move followed its British counterpart's narrow vote earlier this
month not to challenge a proposed law change that would allow doctors to
help terminally ill patients end their lives.

The British Medical Association (BMA) held that any euthanasia legislation
should be decided by parliament.

Previously, the group has strongly opposed voluntary euthanasia, fearing it
would undermine public confidence in doctors.

NZ Medical Association chairman Ross Boswell said earlier that changes made
by the British organisation meant a review in New Zealand was warranted.

"Because the BMA has changed its policy on this, it seems appropriate for us
to review ours."

The NZMA's policy is in line with the World Medical Association's position.
